The TEL programme is committed to developing links with colleagues and users in other countries. This is important to disseminate research findings as widely as possible and also to seek possible links to research being done in the same areas which may lead to fruitful collaborations.
Technology plays a key role in globalisation and the desire to enhance education is a shared goal worldwide. TEL aims to stay abreast of global trends in relevant fields to enrich TEL and contribute where possible.

Programme Director
TEL’s Director Richard Noss works with the project teams and thematic strand leaders to ensure the programme’s aims aims are met. He also works with partner organisations and funders to maximize the impact of the research. Part of this work entails disseminating TEL internationally. Selected highlights include:

- Dejan Ljubojevic: leading a collaboration with the iCOPER project at the University of Vienna to send a proposal to ESRC.
- George Magoulas: Participation in “Thales” grant application with colleagues from Greek universities.
- Engagement with the international learning design community through participation in two events associated with the July 2009 European LAMS Conference held at the Open University: the Pedagogy Planner summit and a “design bash,” at which participants shared design tools and different representations of learning design, as well as carrying out exemplar integrations between tools. As a result of these events, new relationships were forged, in particular with the iCOPER project at the University of Vienna. Played an instrumental role in securing Oxford as the venue for the 2010 conference.
- Made contact with Yael Kali of Israel’s Technion University, and her work on a Design Principles Database. She visited the project on her way to working with Prof Peter Goodyear on his Learning Patterns project at the University of Sydney, and is keen to keep close eye on developments.
- Close relationship with Prof Nancy Law at the University of Hong Kong (Centre for IT in Education). Diana Laurillard gave an invited lecture on aspects of the LDSE project at HKU, and she and Prof Law have made parallel bids to HK and British Academy travel grants to visit each other’s project and act as testbeds for each others’ designs.

- Workshop run by Liz Brown and Mike Sharples for the Alpine Rendezvous, on ‘Education in the Wild’, which included discussion of Personal Inquiry
- Small Scale study for STELLAR on “Location-based and contextual mobile learning” involving a collaboration between the University of Nottingham and the Centre for Learning Sciences and Technologies at the Open University of the Netherlands.
- Continuing connection to the Lets-Go project which is a collaboration between Växjö University, Sweden, and Stanford University, US to design technology-enabled science inquiry activities. The PI and Lets-Go teams have exchanged early research findings, and the Lets-Go team will be contributing a chapter to the book on Orchestrating Inquiry Learning edited by Littleton, Scanlon and Sharples.
- Stamatina Anastopoulou with Claire O’Malley organised a symposium titled “Issues in Scaffolding Collaborative Inquiry Science Learning”, held in CSCL 2009. The symposium brought together researchers from 4 inquiry related projects, namely, the WISE, PI, LETS-GO and SCY.
- Eileen Scanlon has been exploring, with Larry Suter of the NSF, ways of developing opportunities to have further international conversations on informal contexts for science education.
Invited talks
- Keynote by Mike Sharples to the EC-TEL 2009 conference
- Eileen Scanlon gave a keynote address on mobile learning in informal and formal contexts to the ETwinning annual conference held in Sintra in Portugal in October which included researchers, museum educators and teachers.
- Eileen Scanlon and Karen Littleton contributed to an invited SIG symposium on Inquiry Learning organised by Ton de Jong at the EARLI conference in Amsterdam in August, 2009 with a presentation on support for evidence-based inquiry learning: Teachers, tools and phases of inquiry. The international participants included Dan Hickey from the USA and Marcia Linn from Berkeley who also will contribute to the Orchestrating Inquiry Learning book which is planned.
- Mike Sharples visited two universities in Mexico City – Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), and Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM). The week-long programme of activities included discussions with senior staff at both universities on technology-enhanced learning, and a presentation on Personal Inquiry: Supporting Inquiry Science Learning with Mobile Technology.
